The Girl Who Married a Bear

Pueblo

When the people went out together in the spring there was a girl who did not want to go with them. She would go alone to Patukiba [a canyon to the westward]. Her brothers watched her. They saw her going nicely dressed and carrying bread and meat up the canyon. Soon there came a big bear, and they embraced each other. She spread out the food.

The brothers said, "You shoot, and I shoot!"

Bear fell, and they beat the girl. Soon after she died.
